Let's face it, people know when their overweight. But how many know HOW overweight they are? It's all relative to your bmi (body mass index).

Here's how you calculate your bmi: Your weight in pounds x 703 divided by your height in inches squared. So, it works like this: a man 6 feet tall (72 inches) weighs 200 pounds. His bmi would be calculated as follows: 200 x 703 '/. 5184 (72 x 72) = 27.1 (bmi). Using the chart below, he would be classified as overweight.

BMI Classification
under 18.5underweight
18.5 – 24.9normal weight
25.0 – 29.9overweight
30.0 – 34.9class I obesity
35.0 – 39.9class II obesity
over 40.0class III obesity

Now that we understand what classifies as overweight and obese, let's talk about some startling statistics.

Worldwide, 300 million people are obese -- 750 million people are overweight. Obesity is responsible for approximately 400,000 deaths every year. Obesity cost an estimated $75 billion in 2003, because of it's long and expensive treatment.

"The 4 Critical Reasons to Burn Off Excess Fat" may be the triggers that help those who have struggled with sticking to a diet maintain the motivation the need to reach their weight loss goals.

We're all aware that there are health risks of carrying around excess fat. However, 64% of people living in the U.S. are overweight -- 27% of those are classifies as obese. So the message must not be getting through. This list is not in order of importance, as each of the reasons is equally "critical". Let's get started.

Critical Reason #1

Carrying around excess fat leads to coronary heart disease.

Until recently the relationship between obesity and coronary heart disease was viewed as indirect. However, recent studies indicate increased risks in hypertension, reductions in HDL cholesterol, and impaired glucose tolerance. Also, long-term studies indicate that obesity not only relates to but independently predicts coronary atherosclerosis.

Critical Reason #2

Excess fat leads to diabetes.

It's not a coincidence that there's a diabetes epidemic in the U.S. and also an obesity epidemic.

A new study, which looked only at newly diagnosed diabetes cases showed that more and more people do have diabetes. The study shows that people with type 2 diabetes overwhelmingly tend to have one thing in common: being obese or overweight.

Critical Reason #3

Carrying around excess weight leads to asthma.

Reports have shown that nearly 75 percent of asthma related emergency room visits have been among obese individuals. Studies have also shown that obesity pre-dates asthma and the risk for developing asthma increases with increasing obesity.

Critical Reason #4

Extra pounds lead to various forms of cancer.

Breast cancer, cancer of the uterus, colon cancer, kidney cancer, cancer of the esophagus or stomach and cancer of the gallbladder are several of the increased risks obesity and carrying extra weight contributes to.

This list is just a few of the increased risks one gambles with while being overweight and/or obese. Many of these risk factors reduce dramatically, if not disappear, upon undertaking a diet and exercise program. As the weight reduces, so do the risks.
